Deep within the mesmerizing rolling fields, dwelt a young shepherd. His life was mostly unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His primary duty was essentially to tend to his herd of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the wind across the single tree on the mountaintop were his only companions. Day upon day, guarding his responsibilities imbued in him a notion of tranquil contentment.
But, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. On one such day out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plot.
Tales of predators hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy decided to leveraged this fear and played a joke on the villagers.
One afternoon he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but found no beast.
The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This here prank laughed for a few more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf did come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
